Wifi is coming to Manaslu
UPDATE: MAR 2014 – This is now working as far as Samagaon and there is wifi in Hotel Manaslu! The project still appreciates donations for maintenance… There is also satellite wifi available at the Youth Cyber behind the school in Samdo.
The legendary Mahabir Pun, the rural internet entrepreneur, and his team, is now setting his sites on bringing WiFi to Manaslu to benefit schools and clinics of the area. They have developed a fast Local Area Network which means that between Kathmandu and connected villages, it is easy to have video conferencing or send large files. A school teacher can give video classes from Kathmandu or a doctor can, as much as possible, give advice to local health workers after seeing cases across the a video link.
This is Mahabir in action!
The crux of the project is a relay station high above the Budi Gandaki valley close to the entrance to Tsum Valley. Below is a map of the different places that will be reached by the connection.
The cost of this connection will be about US$30,000 and that is being raised locally by villages, through government bodies and from different official organisations. The second phase of the project will be to equip villages with simple computer equipment to benefit from the connection. Timeline is uncertain, but when the money is raised, it will be quick to implement.
